BEAVER/DUFFY WEDDING MINUS 2 DAYS --EVENING

Nice People, Great Wedding Karma

Dinner and a View
On Thursday evening, October 11, family and friends attending the wedding were treated to some Coastal Georgia hospitality.  Jack and Jay hosted a fine South Georgia Barbeque for the couple.  While the wedding is still two days away, many guests had already made it to St. Simons Island and were able to attend.   Jack and Jay have a very nice house making for an elegant reception venue.  The home reflects Jack’s exceptional golfing career and the many memories of a loving family.

There were so many nice people at the Lumpkin Barbeque, it occurred to FOG that Anna and Dan are very blessed to have the support of so many loving family and friends.  We are fortunate also, since most the people at the party are also our own family, in-laws-to-be, or friends.  It makes such a difference in one’s life to have persons of worth as friends; people who love and look out for each other; parents who set good examples and do their best for their children;  and children, who in turn, honor and respect their parents.   Look closely at the next gathering and you too will see these traits in the people attending the Beaver/Duffy Wedding.

Jay at Work
(Sorry no Susie picture with her deviled eggs)
Since no more weddings were scheduled, FOG was not sure when there would be another chance to have Susie’s world famous deviled eggs and fine South Georgia barbecue.  He had two helpings of everything.

Of course Jay’s barbeque was superb, but USMC Don may have to bring his barbeque pit on wheels so that we can have a face-off between North Carolina’s vinegar-based barbeque and Jay’s South Georgia barbeque.

Jay had three sauces, two tomato based and a mustard-based one.  Tomato based sauces, are the most popular in most of the South.  Each barbeque pit master has his/her own special ingredients.  The mustard-based sauces popular in many parts and generally coinfined to South Carolina, are due to German influences.

USMC Don shared that he leaves his pork  in the vinegar sauce for added flavor.  This reminded FOG that in a “Cuban” barbeque we also marinade our pork in a sour orange juice and spices (mojo) which is kind of a vinegar-based.  Perhaps we need to have a Georgia-North Carolina-Cuban/American face off and really compare the differences in barbecue.  As further side note, most etymologists believe that word  barbecue (barbeque) derives from the word barabicu found in the language of the TaĆno people of the Caribbean and the Timucua of Florida.  The word entered European languages in the form barbacoa, from the Spanish, and translates as "sacred fire pit."  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbecue
Well the barbecue lesson is over and we move back to the happy couple and their party.  Below are more pictures from the evening’s festivities.

BEAVER/DUFFY WEDDING MINUS 2 DAYS -- DAYTIME

East Beach and the Beaver Family Compound

FOG After Kayaking
Thursday, October 10, had so much activity that two BLOG postings are needed, one for the day and another for the evening.

Mr. FOG went kayaking again, this time at East Beach.  Last year in October the surf was much rougher.  Today the seas were relatively calm and sand bars had formed a protective barrier, allowing him to kayak more easily.  He started at Massengale Park, near the King and Prince and made it to the Sea Island Bridge and back, a total of about 5 miles not including side excursions to many sand bars along the way.

Starting at low tide made the kayaking easier and more interesting.   Schools of fish were trapped in the shrinking pools of water and the seas' secrets were revealed as the water levels fell.  He was first tempted by a sand bar just off the King and Prince.  A catamaran just beat him to the sand bar, but the sand bar was big enough for two explorers.  The sand bar had been colonized by sea gulls that reluctantly yielded territory to the intruding humans, perhaps knowing their species would ultimately prevail.

Next he set sights on entering the marsh that separates St. Simons Island from Sea Island.  Last year, given the rough surf it was hard to do.   This year helped by the low tides and calmer seas he easily made it up the coast and entered the waterway separating the two islands.  A channel, protected by the sand bar, drains and fills the marsh lands in the center of St. Simons Island.

Fishermen, beachcombers, paddle boarders and sunbathers lined the shoreline as he made his way up the coast.  The marsh was different here from where he had been yesterday.  FOG proudly made it to the Sea Island bridge which provides vehicle access to the exclusive Sea Island.  Heavy surf did pound the lower, undeveloped southern end of Sea Island and a solitary beachcomber searched the marsh side beach any treasures to be discovered.

Afterwards, he was tired from the paddling , and FOG thought a visit to the Colonel Gary’s Officers Quarters, which has a pool, might be nice break before heading home.  In any event, the BLOG needed something on the lives of the Bride and Groom and they were based in the Beaver Family compound.  The Beaver Family compound consists of two large houses with a great backyard that includes a pool, volleyball court and an extensive yard.  FOG expected to find the Beavers frolicking in the pool, and instead found the Beavers, as the name would suggest, busy and hard at work.

Colonel Gary and Vanna Lynn were in the kitchen preparing food, the Bride and Groom were working on an audio visual presentation for the wedding.  Earlier they had put together many wedding welcome gifts for the out of town guests staying at the hotels.   The Groom still had to pick up his tuxedo.  FOG later learned that the tux fit well, so no re-visit to the rental place is needed.  Last year there had been problems with many of the groomsmens' formal rentals.

While there were still a lot of details to be taken care and FOG would have been stressed, the married couple to be, were relaxed and working on an audio visual presentation for the wedding.  The groom  was taking all in stride, with his usual calm style.  The Bride, was perhaps a bit more intense than the Groom, but not nearly as much, if FOG were the Bride.  In any event she looked well-rested and much  relaxed than when FOG first saw her on Monday.  Also Alex, the Bride's brother had arrived and more of the Beaver and Duffy family were arriving to help with anything the couple needed.  This  may be helping to take the pressure off the couple.

Beaver Family and Friends at Pool
FOG decided that the Beaver Compound pool was too inviting to be unused and when Colonel Gary offered an invite, FOG decide to stay a bit.  Colonel Gary was baking a cheese cake and had about an hour of free time while the cake baked to catch some rays poolside.  Soon they were joined by Chris, USMC Don senior, Don the son and his wife Lorraine from Arizona, Madge, Beth, Liza and others from the Beaver extended family and friends. Unfortunately the Bride and groom were not able to join them.  They had too many tasks left to do to enjoy the warm afternoon sun.  Well, they will get some  sun during their Mexican honeymoon.

Beth, the new Wedding Coordinator
Additional Wedding Key Players

Liza, the Maid of Honor

Note:  While the ladies look pretty, FOG agreed to this explanation.  He nearly forced them into taking a picture so that BLOG readers would know who they were when you saw them.  They will be even prettier at the various wedding events in the next three days.  Beth is taking the place of the dismissed "dolce vita" wedding coordinator, and Liza is Anna's Maid of Honor.

______________________________________________________________________________

FOG returned to his own compound, a nice house near the village, sans pool, but the house's welcoming porch had his Lordship, Nurse Sherry, and Philip of Rum enjoying drinks. FOG had a Madras and all shared their day’s adventures.

Errors, Omissions, and Out Right Lies

The BLOG erroneously reported that Beaver/Duffy Wedding would have 250 guest.  The correct number is closer to 150.  The BLOG apologizes to Colonel Gary for any chest pains caused by his thinking that his daughter had secretly invited 100 more guests to the wedding.

BEAVER/DUFFY WEDDING MINUS 3 DAYS AND COUNTING

Kayak Fishing and Beauty Treatments

File Photo
On Wednesday, October 11, three days before the wedding;  the Bride and Groom are furiously working to get the last minute details resolved, while family and guests are making a vacation of the Beaver/Duffy nuptials.  The weather is improving and the forecast is still good to very good for the big day.

While many others went golfing, his Lordship, Phillip of the House of Rum and Coke, and Mr. Fog went kayak fishing.  The day started out early and rough, but ended much better and nice.

The trio had to be at the outfitters early Wednesday morning to pick up the kayaks.  Apparently Nurse Sherry's healthy habits are catchin-on with Mario.  His Lordship thought the fish deserved naturally raised, hormone-free gourmet live shrimp.  Unfortunately these sold for $15 a quart out of a little shack, in a hard to find place off the causeway, full of cats, one barking chiguagua, and an old woman with bad circulation in her legs.
Not having bought live shrimp before, Mr. FOG was agast at the price.   He had recently purchased freshly caught shrimp from a local seafood wholesaler for human consumption at $4.00 a pound.  The shrimp were large and so fresh, that he met the  fisherman delivering the day's catch.

This seafood wholesaler supplies local restaurants and grocery stores.  These shrimp sell at perhaps $10 a pound for you to cook at home, or $20 for a shrimp and grits dinner, a local favorite restaurants.
FOG knows that we want to catch the fish, and the gourmet live shrimp should be what the fish want; but why would one spend more for fish food than on human food?  If it is good enough for me, it should be good enough for the fish.  FOG also thought that charging $15 a pound for bait shrimp, the woman should spend some of the money on a better house.

Life always can get complicated, if you let it, and of course gourmet live shrimp had to have an appropriate home.  A trip to Walmart was needed to get a suitable bait bucket that could be dragged behind the kayak.  This would circulate oxygenated water for the prima dona shrimp to stay alive.  Thankfully we did not have to build a custom a home for these high maintenance shrimp.

They seemed happy enough in the Walmart double-wide trailer bait bucket.  It was a crowded , but an OK home for the expensive shrimp.  Unfortunately the shrimp which were to die anyway, died very quickly after being left in our care.  Only a few made  it alive to the fishing hook.  An altenative theory is that the shrimp died not from bad care, but from homesickness, missing thier fellow shrimp, woman, cats, dog, and shack in the marsh.

The shrimp and such things, make for a good story and a memorable experience.  The kayak fishing was actually very nice after the morning fog lifted and tide started coming in.  We put in on the marsh that separates St. Simons Island from Brunswick.  Phillip caught a small shark and both men caught numerous other fish, plus pesky stingrays.
Mr. FOG does not have the patience for fishing and skipped the fishing preferring to kayak in the various channels that thread the marsh, while his Lordship and Rum Man fished.  He hoped for a better chest from this exercise.  Cranes and other birds were feasting on the many small fish that thrive in the marsh.  The birds seemed to congregate at the rivulets formed by the tides.  These become small channels during low water (tide), making the fish easy prey for the sea/march birds.

As the tide came in, the fishing improved considerably, apparently allowing larger fish to enter the rich feeding area.  Mr. FOG searched for free oysters, but did not find any oyster beds he thought worthy.  He was very pleased to see virtually no trash in the marsh.  Coastal Georgia is very fortunate to have preserved much of its coast, rather than having it be developed.

In the meantime, seventy miles to the Ssuth, beauty was becoming even more beautiful .  Maid of the Mist and Nurse Sherry traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to their favorite hair dresser.  Seeing them at dinner, it was well-worth the trip.

More Beavers Arrive

We saw more of the guests and family arriving.  At a dinner family gathering at Craw Daddy's, a favorite local restaurant , the Beavers easily doubled in numbers in just one day.  The BLOG is counting as “Beavers” as family and friends of Bride, regardless of their last name.  About two thirds of the guests at the table were Beavers.

The total Beaver/Duffy wedding guests are said to be about 250, and probably about even in Beavers, Duffys, and friends of the Bride and Groom.  It is estimated that the Beaver/Duffy Wedding will stimulate the sluggish U.S.economy by about $1.25 million dollars.
The BLOG recommends Crab Daddy's.  FOG had the shrimp and grits and it was one of the best he has had.  Others liked the scallops, sea trout, and fried shrimp.  The restaurant has super fresh sea food and the service was good, especially considering the large group.

His Lordship's Tuna dinner with a Crab Daddy's signature.

Pictured, from left to right, are Sister Momma Jane, Countess Jane and Reverend Randy.   Sister Momma Jane is from Roanoke, Virginia , and is either the sister or mother of Countess Jane, the Bride’s Mother.   Countess Jane and Reverend Randy call beautiful Lexington, North Carolina home.

Pictured are Anna's paternal grandparents, Don and Madge.  You may remember Don, Colonel Gary's father,  from the Greensboro Pig Pickin Fun.  He prepared the pig North Carolina style with vinegar sause.  On Thrusday, Jay from the Duffy camp will prepare a South Georgia BBQ.  Likely the two men will compare BBQ techniques.  If there is BBQ competition sometime in the future, all of surely will be the winners.

At a recent family gathering, the Bride-to be, Anna Duchess of Beaver, inspects the silverware to make sure it is clean for her guests.  She is always concerned about the  smallest of details, that when put together make for a perfect event

Influenced by Martha Stewart's latest book, Making a Home for Your Husband, Civil Partner, or significant Other--The Wife's Role , this fork inspection is one of Martha's secret tips.  You have look closely in between the tines of a fork to see if it is really clean.  If the fork passess this test, then a restaurant, caterer, or dishwasher is worthy of the Martha Stewart seal of approval.  It looks as if Anna has got this tip down pat, and in this case, the restaurant also passes Beaver inspection.    Dan is so lucky.

The newlyweds-to-be eagerly listen to marital advice on how to have the perfect marriage.

There is an elephant's graveyard of spoons on the desert plate.  Pictured are the remains of bread pudding dessert after being passed around the Beaver and Duffy diners.  It looked more appetizing in real life.

Most diners loved it and the carmel syrup.  FOG had a bit of it, but his mother's bread pudding made with stale bread is still his favorite.

On Thursday, FOG hopes to have  Susie's famous deviled eggs which are as good or better than his mother's.

Please feel free to share comments on the BLOG for the newly-weds-to-be and gossipy secrets  should be sent artesiano@yahoo.com

BEAVER/DUFFY WEDDING MINUS 4 DAYS AND COUNTING

Reverend Randy to the Rescue
On Tuesday, October 9, the BLOG learned that Reverend Randy, an ordained Presbyterian minister, will officiate the Beaver/Duffy nuptials.  The Rev. J. Randy Hall is the pastor of Fairmont Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) in Lexington, NC .

The Duffy side of the family may not know that Reverend Randy is also the consort of Countess Jane, the mother of the bride.
You may recall from the earlier BLOG, that the Beaver/Duffy Wedding had no celebrant due to a "dolce vita" fiasco, just days before the cermony.    Another celebrant had to found, and quick.   Reverend Randy stepped in to take the place of the dismissed “dolce vita” vacationing celebrant.  Obviously the dolce vicar thought little of how important this day is in the lives of Anna and Dan.  Better to have someone, as Reverend Randy who knows the bride and groom and wants this day to be perfect for them, besides he might do it "pro bono".

The ceremony will be at Epworth by the Sea, a picturesque Methodist Conference Center just north of the village of St. Simons Island, on the Frederica River.   The Wedding Day weather forecast is for good to very good weather.  See the link below for more pictures of this special place where the couple will exchange their vows.  http://www.epworthbythesea.org/

Two More Confidential Informants

The BLOG has recruited two more informants to help bring you the best insider information.   Hot Lips” is a well-connected person who is driven to find the truth and knows when her sources are holding back secrets.  Also “RON” will be sharing whatever he learns about the Beaver-Duffy nuptials.  Not to worry, Deep Cleavage, who broke the “dolce vita” story ,  is still a valued source.  In working confidential informants, the BLOG tries to confirm stories by having several informants work independently.  We are still looking for a few good men, or women.  Annonymous tips can also be sent to artesiano@yahoo.com

In and Around St. Simons Island

More of the wedding guests are starting to arrive on the island.  Those that can are relaxing a bit before the main event, but many have wedding responsibilities and are getting key tasks finalized.

Colonel Gary, Vanna Lynn, Chris (Lynn’s son) his Lordship, and Phillip of the House of Rum and Coke played golf in nearby Jekyll Island.  No reports on what the Bride and Groom did today, but Mr. FOG followed Maid of the Mist and Tom the Often Wise to see where they were going.  They went to Harris Teeter to buy groceries and they shop the specials.  Maid often asks Often Wise to go get something for her while she tends the cart and she finds other things.  They seemed to be an effective grocery shopping tag team couple.  Often Wise discovered FOG and his cover was blown.  Maid of the Mist suggested that FOG should buy the Artisan pumpernickel bread which was on sale.
In the evening, we were back to Colonel Gary’s Officers Quarters for a pizza get together, which presented another picture taking opportunity.

Perhaps blondes do have more fun???

BEAVER/DUFFY WEDDING MINUS 5 DAYS

Dan the Dragon Slayer and Duchess Anna of Beaver
(Bride is tired but fortunately she photgraphs well and
a nice smile hides this from the camera.
The groom looked rested and relaxed)
On Monday October 8 many of the principal protagonists in the Beaver and Duffy nuptials had arrived to St. Simons Island, Ga.  The leading man and lady, Dan and Anna, joined the Maid of the Mist and Tom the Often Wise, the groom’s parents, already based in St. Simons and who have been busy holding down the fort and getting things ready.
Colonel Gary, the bride’s dad, was also on hand, making the trip from Greensboro and getting settled in his poolside officer’s quarters near Crab Daddys.  Jane, the mother of the bride will arrive soon, as will many more of the supporting actors including brothers, grandparents, friends and other relatives.

Wedding Coordinator and Celebrant Were Replaced Just Days Before the Wedding

The big breaking story is that the Beaver/Duffy wedding coordinator and ceremony celebrant had to be replaced just days before the wedding.  According to “Deep Cleavage”, a BLOG confidential informant, a careless Facebook posting disclosed that the coordinator and celebrant were living the “dolce vita” rather than doing their jobs.  Be careful what secrets you put on your Facebook page.
Deep Cleavage will hopefully keep us informed on all the insider information on the Beaver/Duffy Wedding, much as Deep Throat unraveled the Watergate conspiracy.

The story seems to be that the coordinator and ceremony celebrant were vacationing in Europe, when they should have been at St. Simons Island during  the crucial days before the Beaver/Duffy nuptials.  This vacation faux pas was unacceptable and the coordinator and celebrant were dismissed.  According to sources, the Bride was upset that so much work had gone into the wedding and now at the last minute she had to find a substitute celebrant plus someone has to fill in for the duties of the wedding coordinator.   While people enjoy the rehearsal dinner, reception and other wedding activities; the wedding ceremony is the highlight of the event.  It has to be right and paid professionals need to take their job seriously.  The Groom, as usual was supportive of his Bride and took things in his usual relaxed stride.
We will have more details on the substitute celebrant, if any?  Or perhaps will the couple simply exchange vows and have no celebrant?  Will this dolce vita holiday  "spoil"  the  wedding?  Who will assume the coordinator’s duties?  The test of course be on the wedding day, and hopefully this last minute hitch will be unseen by the many guests attending.  But the BLOG readers have the inside story and know the lowdown on this dolce vita secret.  The lesson is that first you earn the money then you do the dolce vita; not the other way around.

CANCER TREATMENTS IMPROVE HAIR

Mr. FOG made it St. Simons Island for the big Anna and Dan Wedding.  FOG has not seen his Lordship since the August Pig Pickin’ Fun in Greensboro and what a difference 8 weeks makes.

His Lordship in October 2012
His Lordship had been off the chemotherapy since early July but has been receiving radiation in August and September.  During this time, his Lordship’s hair, nearly all lost during the chemotherapy, has come back, but it also has changed.  The facial hair looks thicker and perhaps darker.   New baby fuzz hair is appearing on the top of his head and it is blond as when he was a little boy.  His Lordship also reports having more body hair where he had little or none before, and mostly the facial hair is finer and silky to the touch.    This was not verified by FOG, but FOG can attest to a much fuller looking beard that what he had before the cancer treatments.

Below are some web links to medical literature.  The gist is that certain medications taken for one purpose, ie. heart or cancer medications, can alter hair growth, either causing it to fall out or grow.  In Mario’s case the cancer medications caused his hair to fall out, however when it returned the hair was different in color, texture, and growing more vigorously or places where there had not been much hair.  Did the hair have "genetic" change??

Nurse Sherry and his Lordship at his June 2012 Birthday

Mr. FOG is follicle challenged.  He was told the chemotherapy drugs cause hair to fall out.   He was not told that when the drug was discontinued, vigorous hair growth would result.  Had he know this, he might have tried to get some these drugs while he had the chance.   Perhaps there is a business opportunity here.  Cancer drugs as restorative hair treatments???   The BLOG will continue to monitor the situation and perhaps do its own clinical trials .
WEDDING NOTES:
Anna and Dan's wedding is too big to cover in three Blogs.  Mr. FOG is on-hand in St Simons and will have a daily wedding date update for the five days or so leading up to the big events.  Read the BLOG for a breaking story later today.  However he needs your help, since he can't be everywhere at once.  So please send stories, pictures, etc.  to artesiano@yahoo.com
FOG FOR THOUGHT"Anna and Dan" or "Dan and Anna"  FOG has struggled in deciding the order of the names in writing the BLOG.  He has switched off, with each of pair alternating the top billing.  Generally the woman should go first, but in this age of sexual equality, this seems an outmoded premise.   The "A" before the "D" sounds about as good as the "D" before the "A".    Likely Anna  would want Dan to go first because she loves him and who goes first is not important.  Likewise   Dan would want Anna to go first if this is something that is important to her.
FOG has concluded that the order of the names doesn't matter, since the "and", representing the union, is the most important word.  This conclusion is reinforced by other famous teams, such as peanut butter and jelly and mac and cheese.  It is the combination (union) of these other famous foods, not the order, that is important.  Alone they are good, but not famous.  Together they have become American favorites.

ON THE WAY TO THE WEDDING

Honda Element and Kayak Taking A Break

BLOGs on Mr. FOG's Midwest Road trip are on hold.  He is on the road again going to Anna and Dan's wedding.   But of course there were stops along the way.  It is both the journey and the destination.

DINNER CLUB AT LAKE OCONEE

Kate and Dick are usually the Fall dinner club hosts.  They have a beautiful family lakeside getaway home at Lake Oconee's Cuscowilla Golf Resort.  Decorated by Kate and planned by both, the house is truly a perfect family retreat  .  (Cuscowilla is the name of a Seminole Indian village in Alachua area of Florida.  It was a lake side home.  The Oconee River area used to be a Seminole home until they were driven away by other tribes and moved to Florida.).
The Indians would like what has been to Oconee River which is now a lake in parts.  So too, does the dinner club look forward to visits to this lovely setting.  Our typical routine is a boat trip for cocktails and then our dinner.  And once again Captain Dick and First Mate Kate got the group safely to the Ritz Carlton Hotel dock at the nearby Reynolds Plantation Golf Resort.   It was a warm afternoon for October and hotel guests were still at the pool, board paddling, kayaking and frolicking in the lake.  Fishermen (or is it fisherpersons now a days) patiently were waiting for the big one and other boats waved to us as we rode the lake’s byways to the Ritz.  The trip over and back was almost as good as the drinks.
Captain Dick allowed First Mate Kate to take us back home.  As usual we back faster, with Kate taking the helm.  Although favorable currents and winds might have helped us, First Mate Kate throws caution to the wind and likes to go fast.   An artistic photo of the wind playing with Kate’s hair as she speeded back to the Cuscawilla homestead will have to wait due to technical difficulties.  But we do have a picture of the group at dockside.
Mr. FOG, Lois, Captain Dick, Suzanne, Dave, and First Mate Kate

After a nice boat ride to the Ritz Carlton for drinks, Dave wanted to show the group how much of the stubborn belly fat he had lost.  He does look better.  Dick of course had to also show that his six pack was showing at least two of the pack, and Mario who barely got in the picture, wanted to brag that his pecs had firmed up with yoga and the Early Bird exercise classes.  Lois, Kate and Suzanne, looking rich and famous, smiled and hardly paid any attention to the men's antics.  Instead,  the women calmly enjoyed the afternoon’s last sun rays while relaxing on the boat, saying they have seen this all  before.

CANCER NEWS: On the cancer front, his Lordship just finished his radiation thereapy. It went off well with no apparent sideeffects. In the coming months the issue of the restoration of nerve and muscle function to the leg/foot becomes the important issue.

PAPARAZZI WANTED:  With the upcoming nuptials of Dan and Anna, the BLOG will be focusing on this happy event.  Consequently the BLOG desparatrely needs photographers, insiders, and others who will provide photographs and stories about the event, or the couple's courtship.   Sherry Lane of course will be sharing new stories, but this is a big event and she will need help. The BLOG will try to put out a daily edition for the three days leading to the wedding and of course our big wedding issue on Sunday.

Please send your news stories to artesiano@yahoo.com  and state if want your name the  photo/story credit or want you anonimity protected.
